Aboriginal Coach Mentorship ProgramWithin the ASC’s long-term vision for Aboriginal coaching development, a mentoring approach has been established which annually provides a select group of Aboriginal coaches the opportunity to advance their expertise through a “hands on,” interactive training experience. The mentoring process involves national level coaches designing and delivering a week-long program that offers both National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP) courses and advanced practical training application beyond the textbook/classroom environment. In delivering the program, the ASC has incorporated the Aboriginal Coach Mentorship Program with the National Aboriginal High Performance Hockey Camp. This offers participating coaches with the unique experience of gaining practical experience by working with elite level Aboriginal athletes. The program is viewed as an investment in the personal and professional development of community coaches who aspire to coach at the most competitive levels of their sport. Though the sport of Hockey is the current focus for this program, past camps have involved coaches in the sport of Basketball and Volleyball.
