National Aboriginal Coaching and Leadership Program (NACLP)Overview Coaching is the cornerstone of community sport and recreation. Likewise, the success of Aboriginal participation in sport is dependent on the leadership of qualified coaches. Recognizing this, the Aboriginal Sport Circle established the NACLP. The program supports two main initiatives: The Aboriginal Coach Manual (ACM) project and the Aboriginal Coach Mentorship Program (ACMP). The ASC believes that community coaches are agents of social change. Their expert guidance can have a direct and lasting impact on the healthy, active lifestyles of community members, with specific emphasis on youth members. Because coaches play such an important role in community development, it is of great concern to the ASC that there exists a significant under representation of Aboriginal coaches certified through the National Coaching Certification Program (NCCP). The NCCP is a coach training and certification program for 65 different sports and is offered in both official languages across Canada. NCCP workshops are designed to meet the needs of all types of coaches, from the first-time coach to the head coach of a national team. The NCCP is the recognized national standard for coach training and certification in Canada. (For more information, please visit the Coaching Association of Canada at www.coach.ca.)
