National Aboriginal High Performance Hockey Camp

Overview

The National Aboriginal High Performance Hockey Camp provides an elite national forum for the top Bantam/Midget aged Aboriginal hockey players in Canada. The program promotes a philosophy of personal excellence through sport, which supports the holistic development of all participants. For this reason, the Camp program has been developed to offer a unique blend of high performance training in a culturally supportive environment.

The NAHPHC operates under the leadership of some of the most respected hockey coaches in the country, inclusive of Major Jr. “A”, University, and Olympic Team coaches. Under the coaches’ direction, athletes selected to attend the camp are immersed in an intensive one-week high performance training program. The on- and off-ice technical training sessions are complemented by daily sport science workshops and cultural teachings from local elders who participated in the delivery of the curriculum.

Selection and Eligibility

Access to the Camp is restricted to players identified through an evaluation process conducted at the National Aboriginal Hockey Championships (NAHC). To ensure that selection is achieved through a transparent, independent process, two Selection Committees are formed (one female and one male), each comprised of national level evaluators contracted by the ASC. Members of the Selection Committees attend the NAHC to evaluate and rank every player competing in the Championships. Ultimately, their task is to identify the top 23 male and 23 female players who are invited to attend the Camp.

Coaches attending the Camp as participants in the Aboriginal Coach Mentorship Program are selected through a regional process conducted by their P/TASB. Each P/TASB is eligible to select one coach to attend the Camp. For further details on the Coach Mentorship Program please go to Coach Mentorship Program (add link).

Cost

The Aboriginal Sport Circle covers all costs for the coaches selected to attend the Camp and the top 34 players (17 male and 17 female) selected from the NAHC, while the next 12 top ranked players (6 male and 6 female) are invited to attend the camp at their expense.
