Aboriginal Sport Circle Welcomes New and Returning Board Directors

October 7, 2024

(Ottawa, ON)

The Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC) is pleased to welcome all new and returning Directors to its Board. Four Directors were elected at the ASC's Annual General Meeting on September 20th. Of these, two Directors are new and two are returning for another term.

The ASC Board of Directors leads the efforts to enhance the health and well-being of Indigenous Peoples and communities through sport, physical activity, recreation, and traditional practices. With decades of collective expertise in Indigenous research, policy development, business, governance, and personal involvement in sport-as athletes, coaches, or volunteers-the Board is deeply committed to the power of sport. They believe in its ability to unite people and communities and are passionate about the opportunities it creates for Indigenous participants across Canada.

Two new Directors, Sara-Lynne Knockwood of Nova Scotia and Roiahtate Horn of Quebec, are joining the eight-member Board. ASC Vice-President Janice Forsyth and Director Brendon Smithson were re-elected to serve another term. All will join ASC President Rob Newman and Directors Edward Albert, Charly Buyck, and Kerrie Buchberger.

President Newman looks forward to reconvening the Board to build on the ASC's successes in this new term. "We have reached significant milestones in recent years, including the continued development of the first-ever National Strategy for Indigenous Sport, Physical Activity, Recreation, and Traditional Practices. I am eager to continue this momentum, working alongside our member Provincial/Territorial Aboriginal Sport Bodies and our partners in government and sport organizations, to further benefit Indigenous athletes and communities."

Vanessa McGregor, Interim Executive Director of the Aboriginal Sport Circle (ASC), extends her congratulations to the four newly elected Directors. On behalf of the national office, she expresses enthusiasm in collaborating with them and the entire Board. "Our team is eager to continue advancing the ASC's vision, and we look forward to working closely with the Board to implement our initiatives and bring our new strategy to life."

The ASC extends its deepest gratitude to Jolyne Watson and Derry Yellowfly for their dedicated service on the Board of Directors. Their passion for uplifting Indigenous Peoples and fostering opportunities for growth and development has been invaluable. We sincerely thank them for their contributions and wish them all the best in their future endeavors.
