THE ABORIGINAL SPORT CIRCLE (ASC) IS HONOURED TO ANNOUNCE THE RETURN OF REGIONAL TOM LONGBOAT AWARDS

July 15, 2024

OTTAWA, ON - The Tom Longboat Awards, established in 1951, recognize Indigenous athletes who have made outstanding contributions to sport in Canada. Continuing this long-standing tradition, the ASC is pleased to announce the launch of this year's nominations.

The Tom Longboat Award has a rich history, celebrating the achievements of Indigenous athletes in Canada. Historically, this prestigious honour was awarded regionally, with a national winner chosen from the regional recipients. Over time, the regional awards were discontinued, and the award was given only nationally in partnership with Canada's Sports Hall of Fame. The ASC is excited to revive this cherished tradition with regional awards.

The 2024 Awards will honour athletes for their accomplishments during the program year, from May 31, 2023, to May 31, 2024. Eligible athletes must be of Indigenous (First Nation, Inuit, Métis) descent. The ASC, in collaboration with the Provincial/Territorial Aboriginal Sport Bodies (PTASBs), will oversee a regional selection process, culminating in the selection of two national winners.

ASC President Rob Newman expressed optimism for strong contenders this year: "Year after year, we witness tremendous growth in the Indigenous sport movement, positively impacting athletes and communities alike." ASC Interim Executive Director Vanessa McGregor added: "It is an honour for the ASC to present this prestigious award to deserving athletes. It is both timely and fitting to once again honour Tom Longboat by selecting regional winners, from whom a national winner will be chosen."

The Tom Longboat Awards include a men's and women's category. Award recipients will be recognized not only for their athletic achievements but also for their commitment to sportsmanship, fair play, and being positive role models.

Applicants are requested to complete a nomination package and submit it by August 23, 2024, through their respective PTASBs. The package must include a nomination form and supporting narrative. After each PTASB determines their regional winners, a National Selection Committee will choose one man and one woman athlete from the pool of regional winners.

All award winners will be honoured on November 23, 2024, at the ASC's National Indigenous Sport Summit Awards Gala in Ottawa, Ontario.
